Portugal and Austria were elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council

¨     Portugal and Austria were elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council on 3 June 2026.

¨     Their two-year term will begin on 1 January 2027 and end on 31 December 2028.

¨     The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations.

¨     It consists of 15 members, including 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.

¨     The non-permanent members are elected by the United Nations General Assembly.

¨     The election was held during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

¨     Portugal and Austria won the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group (WEOG).

¨     Portugal received 134 votes in the secret ballot.

¨     Austria secured 131 votes.

¨     Germany received 104 votes in the same election.

¨     Non-permanent members of the Security Council serve a two-year term.

¨     They are not eligible for immediate re-election after completing their term.

¨     Under the UN rotation system, the 10 elected seats are distributed among regional groups.

¨     Portugal and Austria will serve on the Security Council for the fourth time.

¨     Other elected members for the 2027–2028 term include Kyrgyzstan, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe.
