IMD has launched two new AI-based weather forecasting products for monsoon and rain-fed agricultural regions

¨     India Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched two new AI-based weather forecasting products for monsoon and rain-fed agricultural regions.

¨     The first product has been developed by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) for Uttar Pradesh.

¨     It provides rainfall forecasts at a high spatial resolution of 1 km and offers predictions up to 10 days in advance.

¨     It uses data from automatic rain gauges, automatic weather stations, satellites, and Doppler weather radars.

¨     The second product has been developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune.

¨     It monitors monsoon progress at the district level and provides updates every Wednesday.

¨     The system currently covers 3,196 blocks and sub-districts across 16 states and 1 Union Territory, focusing on rain-dependent regions.

¨   These AI-based tools are designed for agriculture, water resource management, and disaster management.

¨  Farmers can use these forecasts for planning sowing, irrigation, crop protection, and harvesting activities.

¨   The systems are overseen by the Ministry of Earth Sciences along with IMD and associated meteorological institutions.
