India Post launched the DIGIPIN system
¨
India Post launched the
DIGIPIN system on 27 May 2025.
¨
The initiative was
introduced under the Department of Posts of the Ministry of Communications.
¨
DIGIPIN stands for
“Digital Postal Index Number.”
¨
The system uses geo-coded
digital addresses.
¨
DIGIPIN is linked with
the India Post network for mail delivery, tracking, and location
identification.
¨
DIGIPIN is a 10-digit
digital address system.
¨
It has been designed to
work with latitude and longitude coordinates.
¨
The system maps a
location into a 4 metre × 4 metre grid unit.
¨
Its objective is to
improve address accuracy in India’s postal system.
¨
DIGIPIN is an open-source
and interoperable system.
¨
It has been designed to
complement traditional addresses rather than completely replace them.
¨
The system can be used in
physical addresses, digital services, and geospatial applications.
¨
Two digital platforms,
“Know Your DIGIPIN” and “Know Your PIN Code,” were launched on 27 May 2025.
¨
These platforms are part
of broader efforts to strengthen digital address management and geospatial
governance in India.
¨
India Post has also
tested a system called “DHRUVA.”
¨
DHRUVA stands for
“Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address.”
¨
DHRUVA is an
Address-as-a-Service platform.
¨ It uses short digital IDs for mail delivery.
¨ The system includes formats such as johndoe@dhruva.
