Government has imposed a strict three-hour deadline on social media platforms

¨     The government has imposed a strict three-hour deadline on social media platforms.

¨     This deadline applies to the removal of AI-generated or deepfake content.

¨     Such content must be removed only after it has been flagged by the government.

¨     Even if a court order directs it to do so, it must be removed.

¨     Changes have been made to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

¨     The amended rules formally define AI-generated content.

¨     They also provide a legal definition for synthetic content.

¨     This framework now clearly categorizes manipulated content created using artificial intelligence.

¨     Digital platforms are prohibited from removing AI labels once they are applied.

¨     They are also prohibited from suppressing associated metadata.

¨     These compliance requirements will come into effect from February 20, 2026.
