South Africa introduces first indigenous foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine

¨     South Africa has taken a major step forward in animal health protection. On February 7, 2026, the country's first indigenous foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine in nearly 20 years was introduced.

¨     The vaccine was developed and manufactured locally by the Agricultural Research Council. It aims to strengthen disease control, protect livestock farmers and livestock, and reduce dependence on imported vaccines.

¨     According to officials, this initiative represents a significant shift towards science-based and proactive management against one of the most serious diseases that plague livestock.

¨     The recently launched foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine in South Africa is the first locally developed vaccine in the country in nearly two decades. At its launch in Johannesburg, Agriculture Minister John Steenhuizen announced the availability of 12,900 initial doses.

¨     The vaccine was developed and produced by the Agricultural Research Council. Weekly production is expected to increase to 20,000 doses by March 2026, ensuring widespread coverage across the country.
