Rising Suicide Rate in Bengaluru Becomes a
Serious Concern
¨
The rising suicide rate
in Bengaluru has emerged as a serious concern.
¨
According to the National
Crime Records Bureau report, the city’s suicide rate remained around 20 per
lakh population during 2022, 2023, and 2024.
¨
With this rate, Bengaluru
has become one of the leading Indian cities in suicide cases.
¨
Experts associate the
trend with increasing urban stress, social isolation, and mental health
challenges.
NCRB and ADSI Report
¨
The National Crime Records
Bureau functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
¨
It releases the
“Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India” (ADSI) report every year.
¨
The report provides
detailed data on accidents, suicides, and related causes across states, Union
Territories, and major cities.
¨
It also analyses the
social and economic factors linked to suicide cases.
Bengaluru and Delhi Statistics
¨
In 2024, Bengaluru
recorded 2,403 suicide cases among the 53 mega cities category.
¨
Delhi reported 2,905
cases, but due to its larger population, the suicide rate stood at 9.8 per lakh
population.
¨
In 2023, Bengaluru
recorded 2,370 suicides.
¨
In 2022, the figure was
2,313 cases.
¨
The continuous rise in
cases is being viewed as a serious warning for both the administration and
society.
Major Causes of Suicide
¨
Family-related problems
emerged as a major cause.
¨
Illness, including mental
illness, also contributed significantly.
¨
Economic insecurity
became another important factor.
¨
Around 66% of suicide
cases involved individuals with an annual income below ₹1 lakh.
¨
Migration stress and
workplace pressure are increasingly affecting mental health.
¨ Social isolation and weak support systems are also considered major reasons.
¨ Rising living costs and rapidly changing urban lifestyles are further intensifying mental stress in metropolitan cities.
