Mahe Tokpo-Raldho Irrigation Canal
Inaugurated in Ladakh’s Changthang Region
¨
The 2.10-km-long Mahe
Tokpo-Raldho Irrigation Canal was inaugurated on 14 May 2026 in the Changthang
region of Ladakh.
¨
The canal is located at
an altitude of over 14,000 feet in the Nyoma region.
¨
It receives water from
Yaya Lake.
¨
The project was launched
in 2022-23.
¨
The canal aims to
irrigate around 100 acres of agricultural land in the Mahe area.
¨
Changthang is a high-altitude
plateau region in eastern Ladakh.
¨
Nyoma is a remote
administrative region within Changthang.
¨ The region experiences
extreme climatic conditions, low temperatures, and sparse vegetation.
¨
Harsh weather conditions
affect agriculture and water availability in the area.
¨
By March 2026, only 1,250
metres of the canal had been completed.
¨ After a review by the
Lieutenant Governor, the remaining 850 metres were completed within nearly two
months.
¨ The canal was inaugurated by Vinai Kumar Saxena.
¨ The inauguration took place during his first visit to the newly created Changthang district.
