Jagannath Prasad Das (J. P. Das) passes
away

Jagannath
Prasad Das, popularly known as J. P. Das, was a renowned Odia poet, playwright,
art historian, and former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.
¨
He
passed away on 3 June 2026 at his residence in Bhubaneswar at the age of 90.
¨
He
was born on 26 April 1936 in Puri district.
¨
He
joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1958.
¨
During
the 1965–66 famine and drought, he served as the Collector of Kalahandi.
¨
He
took premature retirement from the IAS in 1984.
¨
His
major poetry collections include Prathama Purusha, Ahnika, and Parikrama.
¨
He
also wrote a historical novel titled Desha Kala Patra.
¨
He
was awarded the Saraswati Samman in 2006.
¨
He
refused to accept the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1990 for his poetry collection
Ahnika.
¨ As per his last wish, his body will be donated for medical research to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar.
¨ Mohan Charan Majhi expressed condolences on his demise.
