Indian Railways has launched a new DEMU train
¨
Indian Railways has launched a new DEMU train, which is the first in the
country to use an LNG–diesel dual-fuel system.
¨
The train is operational at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
¨
The driving power cars of the 1,400 HP DEMU train have been changed into
a dual-fuel system.
¨
It makes use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to replace approximately 40%
of the traditional diesel consumption.
¨
The converted power cars completed successful field trials. The trials
covered more than 2,000 kilometers.
¨
After trials, the converted power cars are currently in regular
passenger service without any operational issues.
¨ The dual-fuel system reduces carbon dioxide emissions and cuts nitrogen oxide emissions.
¨ This helps improve air quality along rail routes and offers long-term economic savings for Indian Railways.
