Indian Navy is set to
induct five indigenous naval platforms in 2026 to further strengthen its
maritime capabilities.
¨
These include two Project
17A stealth frigates, one Survey Vessel (Large), and two Anti-Submarine Warfare
Shallow Water Crafts.
¨
The ships are named INS
Dunagiri, INS Mahendragiri, Sandhayak (Sodhak), Agray, and Malvan.
¨
All vessels have been
built by Indian shipyards, highlighting the country’s growing defence
manufacturing capability and self-reliance.
¨
Project 17A is a class of
advanced stealth frigates developed for the Indian Navy.
¨
These warships feature
low radar signature, advanced weapon systems, and modern combat technologies.
¨
Their design makes them
difficult to detect on enemy radar.
¨
INS Dunagiri is the fifth
ship of the Nilgiri-class and was delivered to the Indian Navy on 30 March 2026
by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
¨
INS Mahendragiri is
scheduled for induction into the Navy in June 2026.
¨
These frigates are
expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime security capabilities.
¨
The Survey Vessel (Large)
named Sandhayak is the fourth and final ship in its class of four vessels.
¨
The contract for this
project was signed in 2018.
¨
It was also delivered on
30 March 2026, built in Kolkata.
¨ Survey vessels are used for hydrographic surveys, navigation charting, and seabed data collection.
¨ This data is crucial for naval operations, maritime safety, and scientific research.
