India Becomes World's Largest Coconut Producer: A Major Step Towards Boosting Farmers' Income

¨     India has further strengthened its position as the world's largest coconut-producing nation. India's share in global production exceeds 30%.

¨     In the Budget for 2026–27, the government also announced a new Coconut Incentive Scheme aimed at boosting coconut production and improving productivity.

¨     This initiative has been launched with the objective of increasing the income of millions of farmers and modernizing farming practices.

¨     India ranks first in global coconut production, holding a share of 30.37%.

¨     Out of the total global area under cultivation (12,390 thousand hectares), approximately 2,165.20 thousand hectares are utilized for coconut cultivation in India.

¨     ​​The country produces approximately 21,373.62 million coconuts annually.

¨     Coconut cultivation plays a pivotal role in India's agrarian economy and rural livelihoods.

Productivity and Farmers' Dependence

¨     A large segment of the population in India depends on coconut cultivation.

¨     Approximately 30 million people are associated with this sector.

¨     This includes nearly 10 million farmers.

¨     The average productivity stands at approximately 9,871 coconuts per hectare.

¨     The government has launched the Coconut Incentive Scheme in the Budget for 2026–27.
